Harold William “Bill” Fowler

Harold William “Bill” Fowler 84, of St Joseph, Michigan passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 5th, 2015 at Caretel, surrounded by his family. Born on November 21, 1930 in Benton Harbor, Michigan, he was the son of Harold Wright Fowler and Marjory Berger Fowler. In 1955 Bill graduated from the University of Michigan Dental School, and began his lifelong commitment to dentistry with the US Army in Killeen, Texas. That same year he married Sylvia Carol Upton, with whom he had three children, Matthew, Sarah, and Thomas. In 1957 he started his practice in St Joseph, Michigan, joining his father, Harold Wright Fowler where his career grew and thrived. In 1973, Bill married Judith Yerington. Together they successfully created a happy family life that incorporated Judy’s two sons John and Michael Yerington, and Bill’s children from his previous marriage.

Bill was a member of the American Dental Association, the Lakeland Dental Society, the General Academy of Dentistry, the American College of Dentistry, the International College of Dentistry and in 1989 was awarded the Michigan Dental Association Dentist Citizen of the year. He served on many boards, including the University of Michigan School of Dentistry Alumni Society, University of Michigan School of Dentistry Oral Cancer Detection Clinic, Lake Michigan College Board of Advisors, Twins City Symphonic Society, Benton Harbor Kiwanis Club, Easter Seal Society for Crippled Children and Adults, the Migrant Rural Community Health Association and the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Bill is survived by his wife Judy Fowler, his children Matthew Fowler, Thomas Fowler, and Sarah duPont, stepsons, John and Michael Yerington, son-in-law Douglas duPont, daughter- in-law Nancy Fowler, and step- daughter- in- law, Elizabeth Yerington. He leaves 11 grandchildren, Carrie, Alexandra, William and Sophie duPont, Renee Fowler Cook, Scott, Elizabeth and David Fowler, Emily and Gillian Yerington, and Michael J. Yerington. 

A celebration of Bill’s life will be held on November 9, 11:30am at Trinity Lutheran Church, officiated by Michael Roth, 613 Court St, St Joseph, Michigan, 49085. Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 8, from 2:00-4:00pm at Starks and Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd, St Joseph, Michigan 49085. A family burial will take place at Riverview Cemetery. Bill was a passionate and caring father, husband and friend and was a leader in his community. He loved University of Michigan Football, travel, genealogy, long distance bicycling, playing bridge, and reading. He will be remembered for his strong mind, gentle and humble demeanor and his caring for others.
