Shirley Fields

Mother Shirley Jean Fields, 79, of Benton Harbor, MI went home to be with her Lord and Savior on September 14, 2015 at Lakeland Hospital, surrounded by her family. Services will be held on Tuesday, September 29,. 2015 at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, 756 Highland Ave., Benton Harbor, MI. Visitation will begin at 10:00am followed by an 11:00am service.

Mother Shirley was born January 5, 1936 in Benton Harbor, MI to the union of Ruthetta Brooks and Ervin Johnson.

Mother Fields graduated from Benton Harbor High School. She was a member of Christian Light Missionary Baptist Church, where she once served as the president of the mission board and she also sung in the choir. Mother Fields Christian journey never left her from her childhood. She continued to stay in church throughout her whole life and continued to love the Lord up until her passing. She enjoyed checking on the sick and shut in with her daughter and would help anyone who was in need. Mother Fields was known for giving what one would call a "surprise blessing" whether it was in person or a little note in the mail. She loved children and she worked numerous jobs involving children. She worked as a school bus driver and later she ran her own child day care. She also worked at the Readiness Center as a foster grandparent.

Survivors include her son, Rev. Thomas (Kenya) Fields of Benton Harbor, MI; daughter Betty Jones of Rockford, MI; five stepchildren of Ohio; two grandchildren Reginold (Shakia) Fields of Benton Harbor and Gerald Jones of Grand Rapids MI; six great-grandchildren: Carla Fields, Amari Newman, Diana Wright, Gerald Jones III, Mercedeaz and Jamison Jones; one sister, Marjorie Johnson of Kalamazoo MI; special friend, who checked on her everyday, Mother Florence Bennett. Mother Fields also has an extended church family throughout this community. She will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and her daughter, Beverly Fields.
