Gary Edward VanHall Obituary

Gary Edward VanHall “Smitty”, age 73, of Benton Harbor, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving wife. Arrangements are entrusted to Starks & Menchinger. Those wishing to leave an online condolence may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com.

Born May 8, 1952, in Grand Haven, Gary was the son of Loretta VanHall Vanderwier. He graduated from Grand Haven H.S. and continued his education at Eastern Michigan University where he earned a BBA, Marketing degree.

Gary loved being a father to his 3 daughters – Elizabeth, Allison and Carolyne. As a dad, he loved holding and caring for them. Attending their theatrical events and coaching their soccer team held fond memories for him. He was an avid golfer and tennis player and shared his talent with Liz and Caroline teaching them tennis. He was very proud of the success they have achieved in their careers and the families they have built.

Later in life, he fell in love with Sharon Christiansen, and they married May 17, 2014, in St. Joseph. Together they shared a beautiful and loving life with family and with each other. Gary will also be remembered as a U of M fan, cheering on their football team or, whoever was playing against The Ohio State University.

Gary is lovingly remembered by his wife – Sharon; daughters – Elizabeth VanHall, Allison (Makendree) VanHall, and Caroline (Jon) Komarmy; 4 grandchildren – Harrison Komarmy, Geo Morson-Matra, Liam Drury and Ray Drury; sister – Susan (Greg) Gavin; and niece – Courtney Cummins.

Gary’s legacy is one of love and strength. He was a man of commitment and integrity. Offering help whenever asked and being the rock you could count on. He loved laughter and always had a joke ready to tell.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Contributions in Gary’s name can be made to Wounded Warrior Project.
