Theodore “Ted” Bachunas, age 90, passed away at Hanson Hospice Center in Stevensville, MI on December 10th.
Ted was born April 1st, 1935 in Benton Harbor, MI to Sophia H. and Alexander J. Bachunas who both immigrated to the U.S. from Lithuania. The family lived in Sodus Township, as his father Al founded Tabor Farm Resort with his brother and business partner Joseph Bachunas. Ted went to the one room Tabor School, Benton Harbor High School, and graduated from Michigan State University. He also attended Loyola Law School. At an early age he worked at Tabor Farm and continued during college vacations. After MSU he worked for a hotel accounting firm in both Chicago and Cleveland. He then returned to St. Joseph, and purchased Ludlow Travel with Richard Ray in 1972.
He was active in many community organizations: Ft. Miami Heritage Society, St. Joseph Today, Old St. Joseph Neighborhood Assoc., The Out Center, and served as President of the Southwest Michigan Symphony. His interest in old homes led him to purchase the Kent House on State St. in St. Joseph and the house next door, where he resided until his death. He was fortunate to travel extensively, with cruises as his favorite way to experience the world. Italy and India were his two favorite countries.
Cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of Life will be held at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph on Saturday December 13th. Visitation from 10:00 until 11:30am with a brief service following at 11:30am. Fr. Richard Prendergast will officiate.
Ted is survived by his nephews, Kevin Geiser (Ann Dahmer), Craig Geiser, Eric (Cindy) Geiser and two Great nephews, Cameron and Ryan Geiser. Also, dear friends David, Rich, Bruce and many others. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister and brother-in-law Elaine and Dale Geiser.
