Free Wellness Workshop and Screenings for American Heart Month
In honor of American Heart Month, Community Health and Wellness at Lakeland Health will offer a free wellness workshop and healthy cooking demonstrations on Wednesday, February 25, at First United Methodist Church, 2950 Lakeview Avenue, St. Joseph.
From 8:00 to 10:30 a.m., community members can receive free heart health screenings, which include a free fasting cholesterol lipid panel, blood pressure, and body mass index (BMI). The cholesterol lipid panel consists of total cholesterol, HDL (“good” cholesterol), LDL (“bad” cholesterol), triglycerides, and blood sugar. A 12-hour fast (no food, only water) is required. Participants must be age 18 or older.
The morning will include three classes for community members to learn more about heart health:
• 8:30 to 9:00 a.m. – “Because Every Heart Matters: Early Heart Attack Care,” a class that educates participants on recognizing the signs of a heart attack, the importance of early treatment, and how to reduce the risk of heart disease.
• 9:15 to 9:45 a.m. – “MyPlate 101,” a seminar that shows attendees how to read labels, avoid portion distortion, and learn how to eat better on a budget.
• 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. – “Stress Management 101,” a presentation that helps participants identify stressors in their lives and find practical solutions for reducing or managing stress.
Healthy cooking demonstrations will be available throughout the event. Registration is required; walk-ins will be accepted if space is available. To make an appointment, call (269) 556-2808 or (866) 260-7544. Visit www.lakelandhealth.org or find Lakeland Health on Facebook or Twitter for more classes and events.
