The Heritage Museum and Cultural Center receives grant from the Frederick S. Upton Foundation.

The Heritage Museum and Cultural Center is pleased to announce the receipt of a grant of $75,000 from the Frederick S. Upton Foundation in support of the Museum’s 50th Anniversary Campaign. This grant includes an outright gift of $25,000 and an additional challenge grant which will match public donations dollar for dollar up to a maximum of $50,000. The purpose of the capital campaign is to sustain the operations of the museum by creating a building fund and provide funding for exhibits, education, and the preservation of artifacts, memorabilia and oral histories which tell the history of Benton Harbor, Saint Joseph, and the surrounding area.

“This is an opportunity for citizens to double their gifts to the museum,: said Events and Operations Director Amy Zapal. “With these monies we can continue to create great exhibits, such as our current Southwest Michigan in the Civil War, Benton Harbor’s Boat Building Industry, In Style: 50 Years of the Heritage Museum’s Fashion Collection, and the upcoming Sports in Southwest Michigan. We can expand our educational tours for school children and scouts, our walking tours of the Twin Cities, as well as our monthly public programs. We can better preserve the many historical treasures donated to the museum by local citizens and businesses.”

Donations are completely tax-deductible, and will be processed by the Berrien Community Foundation. Checks may be made out to the Berrien Community Foundation with the Heritage Museum’s 50th Anniversary Fund noted on the memo line and sent to the Berrien Community Foundation, 2900 S. State Street, St. Joseph, MI 49085. “We are most grateful to the Upton Foundation and to all the donors to our capital campaign whose generosity will allow us to continue our mission to honor the past and embrace the future,” Zapal said.

The Heritage Museum and Cultural Center is located at the Priscilla U. Byrns Center, 601 Main Street, St. Joseph and is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
