International Survivors of Suicide Day Event at Lory’s Place
(ST. JOSEPH)– Lory’s Place, a grief healing and education center of Hospice at Home, a Lakeland HealthCare Affiliate, will host an International Survivors of Suicide Day event on Saturday, November 22, at 1:30 p.m. Lory’s Place is located at 445 Upton Drive, St. Joseph.
This free event is open to the public– attendees do not have to be a participant at Lory’s Place.
On International Survivors of Suicide Day each year, a unique network of healing conferences helps individuals and families who have lost someone to suicide connect with others to express and understand the powerful emotions they experience. Survivors of suicide loss from around the world come together for support, healing, and information.
The "Day of Healing for Bereavement after Suicide" broadcast will be shown at Lory’s Place as well as other sites around the world with time for discussion afterward. The broadcast includes a blend of emotional support and information about resources for healing. “Veteran” survivors and mental health professionals address the questions that so many survivors face: Why did this happen? How do I cope? Where can I find support? Since many survivors also find it helpful to understand something about the science of suicide prevention and bereavement, the program also includes a brief presentation of research highlights by mental health professionals.
International Survivors of Suicide Day is always the third Saturday in November. It was officially founded by a U.S. Senate resolution in 1999 through the efforts of Senator Harry Reid of Nevada who lost his father to suicide. In recognition of the fact that suicide knows no geographic or national boundaries and that sites are organized on every continent, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s program is called International Survivors of Suicide Day.

Other community bereavement services offered through Hospice at Home and Lory’s Place include regularly scheduled age-appropriate support group sessions that allow children and adults to interact with peers who have suffered similar loss. Groups for children and adults who are anticipating a loss or who have experienced a loss through pregnancy are also available, as well as educational and workplace grief programs. All community bereavement services are provided free of charge thanks to local community contributions.
