Lake Michigan College completely dominated Kellogg Community College for three quarters, overpowering the Bruins for a 92-42 victory. The Lady Hawks jumped out to 28-5 first quarter lead and never looked back, handing KCC their worst loss since playing third-ranked Owens Community College.
LMC, ranked 20th nationally in Division II, never let the Bruins anywhere near the paint in the first half. Kellogg shot 22.2 percent from the field and two for 11 outside the arc. At the half, The Red Hawks had built a 56-18 lead. Hailey Maas scored 16 points in the half with teammate Jade Mosier at 10 points.
Lake Michigan came out in the third quarter with a 23-2 run before Red Hawk coach Jason Cooper pulled his starters. “We needed that”, explained Cooper. “We played well, we were aggressive.”
For Lake Michigan, it was more like a tune-up for Saturday’s rematch against Kalamazoo Valley Community College. The Cougars, 8-1/16-3 and ranked sixth nationally, are tied with LMC atop the western conference of the MCCAA. KVCC’s only conference loss is an 89-64 defeat against Lake Michigan. LMC fell to Mid-Michigan the following week 72-54 for their only conference loss.
Cooper said his team hit on all cylinders in their first game, offensively and defensively. “Our defense has improved and you can expect it to go down to the wire. This will be a true test for us on Saturday. We need some players to step up.” Cooper expects the pace of the game to be much quicker this time.
Lake Michigan, 8-1/16-4, outrebounded Kellogg 50-28, holding the Bruins to 14 for 55 from the field, forcing 28 turnovers and grabbing 17 steals. Maas led LMC with 25 points; Kelsee Kinder had 15 and Jade Mosier 11 for three quarters of work.

The Lake Michigan College men spotted Kellogg Community College a 12-point lead just over halfway of the first half. Like past games, the Red Hawks came back to erase the deficit, but this time never relinquished the lead. LMC jumped in front with 1:21 left and took a 49-45 lead into halftime.
Nine different LMC players had scored by halftime as Red Hawk coach Jeremy Schaffer subbed players in and out. Meanwhile, the Bruins were shooting 66.7 percent from the field and three-point land, making six of nine.
LMC would open an eight point lead in the second half, but it was short-lived as the Bruins continued their three-point assault. Kellogg cut the lead to three with 7:32 left, 77-74. Cortez Moore and Brian Harris went to work for LMC, scoring 24 second half points including 11 for 13 from the foul line.
Shaffer said the game “didn’t start out the way we wanted,” LMC trailed 12-4 when the Red Hawks called their first time out, 2:41 into the game. “We put more pressure on them with our guards.”
When the buzzer sounded four of LMC’s five starters were in double figures and Moore, coming off the bench, led all LMC scorers with 22 points. Harris had 21 points, Spencer Adams 15, Gavin Rasler 14 and Bryce Saxton 13 points. The Red Hawks shot 54 percent from the field while KCC shot 59.7 percent. The difference was in free throws. LMC made 32 of 37 while the Bruins made 13 of 20.
Lake Michigan (4-5/7-13) travels to Kalamazoo Valley on Saturday to face the Cougars (2-7/8-12). The Red Hawks escaped with a 79-76 home win in their first conference meeting.
