Lake Michigan College Honors Dr. Sue Balmes with Professor Emeritus Title

 

At its October board meeting, the Lake Michigan College Board of Trustees proudly bestowed the prestigious title of Professor Emeritus upon Dr. Sue Balmes, honoring her 20 years of exceptional service, academic leadership, and unwavering commitment to student success. Dr. Balmes has made a lasting impact on the college and the broader community through her contributions to biological sciences, global outreach, and her mentorship of both students and faculty.

 

Dr. Balmes' journey at Lake Michigan College began as a student, and she eventually rose to become a respected leader in the college's biology department. After graduating from LMC, she earned her Ph.D. and pursued cutting-edge cancer research at the University of Houston’s Anderson Cancer Center. Her return to LMC marked the beginning of two decades of exemplary teaching, curriculum development, and leadership, including securing a significant Title III grant that modernized the college's biology offerings.

 

Throughout her tenure, Dr. Balmes also led international initiatives, including her work with Project 1808, which introduced LMC students and faculty to global education opportunities through the development of a college in Sierra Leone. Her commitment to fostering educational access across borders has enriched the learning experience for students and positioned LMC as a hub for cross-cultural academic exchange.

 

Dr. Balmes' passion for science, her dedication to student success, and her collaborative spirit made her a beloved member of the LMC community. Her influence extended beyond the classroom, with leadership roles on numerous college committees, including the Internationalization Committee and Curriculum Committee. A mentor to many, she fostered a supportive academic environment and inspired countless students and colleagues.

"Her tireless commitment to the advancement of science education, her innovative approach to teaching, and her profound impact on the lives of our students make her most deserving of the title of Professor Emeritus."

 

The Board of Trustees’ decision to grant Dr. Balmes this honor reflects the deep respect and admiration she has earned within the college community. Her legacy of service, academic excellence, and global engagement will continue to inspire future generations of students and faculty at LMC.
